Co-washing is a term (that cannot be found in a normal dictionary) which  is derived from the word " COnditioner + WASHing". It simply means washing your hair with conditioner instead of shampoo.

You can see this term also as CO (conditioner only),CW (cowashing or co-washing).

For most heads washing your hair with shampoo especially a shampoo that contains harsh sulfates like Sodium Laureth, Myreth or Lauryl Sulfate; Ammonium Lauryl and Laureth Sulfate e.t.c,can be drying on the hair/scalp and irritating to the eye and or skin.

So sometimes it's good to avoid them by using a 'sulfate free' shampoo ,a shampoo with mild sulfates, some natural shampoo substitute or just reduce the usage of a sulfate shampoo.

That's where co-washing comes in. Most rinse out conditioners contain a small amount of surfactants which help to gently clean the hair. Not as well as a shampoo might do but considerably good. What makes it so good in my point of view is:

  • it adds moisture to the hair
  • reduces frizz
just to name a few.

So this is an ideal addition to a regime of someone with dry, normal, frizzy hair.
I don't recommend this for people with oily hair.Such case needs a different form of care.

Lets go to the point now...how do i co-wash.

1.Get a light (preferably silicone free) cheap conditioner. You can get an expensive one if you want but if you are doing it frequently you better get something cheap that works on your hair.
2.Rinse your hair with warm water and apply a glob of a conditioner to your scalp like you would do with a shampoo.
3.Massage it and work it into your scalp (note that some conditioners foam but that's ok).
4.Rinse you hair very well again with warm water, to get rid of the conditioner. You can follow up with a hair mask for additional moisture.
6. Do a final cold water rinse. Why?Read hair loss in the shower tip no 1.
7.Continue with your normal styling routine. Go ahead and style your hair as you please.

Now take notice of your hair. How does it feel?Does it feel moisturized, smoother and quite clean?Probably it might take some time for your hair to get used to it before you are able to see a significant difference.

This can be done daily and won't dry out your hair like a shampoo would.Once a week i recommend you use a shampoo just to get a deeper cleansing.
