Seasonal Shedding - Fall & Spring

Is it autumn or spring and your hair sheds more than your normal? Don' t fret read on it might be seasonal hair loss.

From trees to your household pet (if you have one :) ), there is a season they all shed more than usual. Trees shed their leaves while pets their fur. Same thing happens to most humans. In fall/autumn and spring most humans experience increase in hair loss more than their usual. This is due to a combination of biological changes that take place mostly in the environment that affect our internal body response, things like changes in the intensity exposure to daily sunlight and more.

Those changes trigger a response of increment in shedding. You start losing more and more hair out of the sudden without knowing the cause. Then you start worrying and stressing which make things worsen. Chill out and let nature do its work. Of course you should do your best to continue caring for your hair and also the new hairs that will start taking the place of those old hairs, have a diet rich in nutrients and drink water. Seasonal hair loss is diffuse that means you will be losing hair from all over your scalp and not a particular spot of your scalp. It should last  for a maximum of 6 weeks. If you are experiencing severe thinning, takes more than 6 weeks to normalize or no regrowth make sure you have a check up way before it becomes severe because it might not be seasonal hair loss.

So whenever the bell of :
September - October - November
March - April - May

rings....Remind yourself to be prepared for seasonal hair loss which is a natural process, a function to take place according to your body clock.

Some people might experience seasonal hair loss in other seasons/months but majority on spring and fall.

Now lets all chill out and stop counting hairs, tee-hee.

Are you experiencing seasonal hair loss?Which time does it take place and how long does it last?

  1. I have seasonal hair loss from the end of September to the beginning of December...It's so frustrating and I do tend to panic but now that I know its my natural shed period these last 2 years I haven't let it get to me much. I just relaxed my hair and I see that my hair has thinned out especially towards the ends but I am bra strap length now so I'm grateful....I pray my ends can recover by next relaxer without me having to cut inches off. Thanks for the information :)

    1. You are very welcome :) Thanks for dropping a comment too. To regain your thick ends it will take a process but be happy, it takes just some little tweaks and patience.

  2. Thanks for this post. Every August to September my hair starts to shed in clumps. I noticed it a few years ago. It's very scary as I already have thin hair. And I get very stressed out. It just occurred to me that maybe it happened to others too. It's comforting to know I am not alone.

    1. Hi Anonymous,
Does it happen to you every year then you regain it's thickness? If you don't regain your thickness you should look deeper into it as it could be something more than just seasonal hair fall.

    1. Hi Anonymous,
as I said in the article it usually lasts up to 6 weeks. You haven't reached the 6 weeks mark. So if you are not experiencing thinning or balding try to relax a little as stress often increases hair loss. So give it a couple of weeks of November, if it's seasonal hair loss you won't lose all your hair. But if not you should have a medical check up because it could be caused by other factors. Hope this was helpful to you.

    1. I suggest you go to your doctor for a general check up. Things like stress, deficiency, thyroid e.t.c can cause hair fall. So you better make sure everything is medically fine if you have an unusual hair loss.

    1. Hi Anonymous,
yes it might be so for you. That's why I stated "Some people might experience seasonal hair loss in other seasons/months but majority on spring and fall." In your case it could be seasonal hair loss. I can't really tell. The word seasonal doesn't always pertain to the "4 seasons" but more of it lasting for a time frame usually. It's great your hair is regrowing. Thanks for commenting :)

  8. I've noticed hair loss in the spring for the last few years now. My hair is already very fine and thin. It's really depressing. It gets so thinned out to the point you can see my scalp. I tease my hair all over and then smooth it out with a brush and put it in a pony tail so I can disquise it and make it look like I have some volume. I went to my doctor a couple of years ago, who sent me to a dermatologist, and had extensive tests done on my iron and thyroid and everything came back normal. The dermatologist suggested I use Rogaine to stimulate regrowth and I am finally starting to get some growth but a couple of days ago, I started shedding again...it's April afterall. It's so saddening. :(

    1. I would ask to see the test results. My doctor said my tests results were normal too. I was experiencing alopecia areata in combination with other symptoms that were all signs of iron deficiency. Turns out my iron levels were extremely low normal. Once I got my iron levels up, all of my symptoms went away. Including the hair loss. Research ferritin levels and hair loss. Supposedly ferritin levels below 70 will cause hair thinning/shedding.

    2. Hi Tara,
it would have been nice if they could check the vitamin/minerals amount in your body. Sadly many doctors don't do that. If you have hair loss or shedding they usually check for thyroid and iron. If they see everything is normal they then tell you maybe you are missing vitamin E you can go to a dermatologist to check that. But sometimes you have to do your own research and find a doctor that can prescribe the right tests for you. As there is a spectrum of minerals and vitamins besides iron that can cause such hair loss/ thinning. Sometimes some people have hereditary hair loss or shedding which in that case you'd see everything is on check but the hair continues to shed/thin as it is a natural hereditary process yet sometimes that's not the case. I can't tell what you are missing but I advice you make sure you have a good diet that gives you the vitamin/minerals needed for your body and if for example you dislike certain types of foods that have specific vitamins in them try to find an alternative with the same vitamin/minerals in it.

  9. I moved to a country with 4 seasons from the tropics. So it gets really confusing for me when suddenly i start to shred more than usual. I have experienced hair loss before, due to extreme work-related stress, nutritional deficiencies and anaemia (low iron and B12). First it thinned out then started losing. But since then i have corrected most of these causes, except for stress. For sometime now, my hair fall has been between 50-60 strands. I get stressed every time i need to brush my hair and counting makes it worse. And now that it´s spring, suddenly i started losing a lot more without reason. It´s not easy to relax. But this article is comforting to me and i guess i just need to see what happens. Thanks!

    1. Hi there Anonymous,
yes it can be very hard and/or frustrating. Do what you can to work with it. I have some tips for hair shedding and stuff but i'm yet to evaluate if it is effective. There are many tips online but I don't know for me many of those do not work. Maybe it's just me but I don't really want to post something that does not work for me, make sense to me or I am unsure if it works for others that's why I haven't written anything pertaining that. Yes what works for me might not work for others and vice verca but at least I prefer sharing what I at least think to be more effective. Anyways, I haven't find a stable method on coping with stress but once I find something that works i'd try to share it over here. Till then take care of your hair and think of how grateful you are to at least have hair. There are people who want to have hair but can't due to alopecia, chemotherapy and much more so be grateful to at least have what you have and take care of it as much as you can. That's what your task is. To do your best and hopefully the rest would work for you.

  10. Hey hi...first of all its really so kind of u to provide such a good a valuable information...
I am too suffering from the seasonal hairfall but it doesn't start in autumn season but in first week of June till present..
Is there anything specific which we can have in order to lessen the effect?
As my hairs becomes very thin since past 4 n 5 years..

One more thing in last winter season I had very good diet which included egg, cheese, one glass of tomato, beetroot and carrot juice, one aawvla daily and I noticed some positive results.
So is it possible to have changes in our hair structure due to good food habits?

And lastly if we are doing exercise to be slim so would it also result in hairfall?

Please please please answer to my all queries...I would be highly obliged to u..

    1. Hey Kirti! Good questions. Each person's condition defers so I can't really give advice but I can give suggestions on which you can carefully try if you want. Make sure you have no allergies before you do so. Lets tackle each question of yours. I haven't find a way to lessen the effect that works for me in which I can suggest but some things I think work somehow is aloe vera juice....one thing I love is green tea. I make an infusion of it and spray it on my scalp like a leave in conditioner...that really helped me I must say. Also, yet diet has an effect on hair because through your diet your body gets the vitamins, proteins, lipids and minerals needed to produce hair along with other bodily functions and lastly exercise increases blood circulation in the body which usually increases hair growth but if your diet is not balanced as you try to reduce weight it can make your hair thin down or even get brittle/shed. So exercise and a healthy balanced diet is a good thing to have alongside each other. I hope these answer your questions. Feel free to share this blog with your friends and i'm glad to see your comment. :)

N yeah I uses aloe Vera juice on my sclpe but my mom says tat it is increses ur hair fall
      Is it possible?
I mean does aloe Vera can result in hairfall...

One more thing I did not understand is the right food with right exercise..
Actually I am well maintained expect my tummy area which is buldging..so I do exercises only for tat specific area like crunches
So what kind of diet I should take with this..
I do also takes fresh cow's milk before bed...

      Plz help me in this..
N yeah all my friends too liked your blog..they said it contains very valuable information..

    3. N yeah I too hv used aloevera juice as leave in conditioner.. n after getting dry it makes very smooth hairs but as I told earlier I stopped using it..

    4. Hi Kirti,
if you check out online you'd see aloe vera being said to promote hair growth and not hair loss. One example is J. Chem. Pharm. Res., 2010, 2(1): 21-29 It notes "Aloe vera is used in hair loss treatment.
The enzyme content of Aloe vera prevents hair loss by protecting the scalp against any diseases.
Aloe vera also helps in the reduction of dandruff." Well, if you have allergy on aloe or your scalp/skin does not like it then it could cause hair loss for that reason it's good to know what you are allergic on and what not. Now as for your diet...eat colorful, raw fruits, vegetables, meat (if you are not vegetarian, raw food eater or vegan). Just about anything you know would be healthy to your body. You can try eating more natural, homemade and less synthetic foods. For example natural juice instead of soda. Knowing how to read food labels would also be beneficial to you. Thanks for sharing this blog with your friends :) I hope more people get to know it and also that your questions are full answered.

  15. Hi.. I have been experiencing hairfall the last one year - and in the months March til July, my hairfall was a lot - it had reached upto 70 strands at one point but during those times, it was still above 25-30 per day.
It gotten less after that but since March 2nd week, my hair has been falling again and again I'm back to 25-30 strands per day and its stressing me out seeing a lot of hair falling coz i don't want to experience the same as before.
I started using Minoxidil, changed my shampoo and conditioner and been applying Moringa oil at least 3 times a week. But now, even after that, my hair is falling again. I've done scalp and hair treatment but now, esp the last one, it didnt work at all. I'm so scared right now thinking what if I experience the same thing as last year.
It's summer here and its pretty hot. I'm believing its also coz of that.. what else can I do? :(

    1. Hello pinky,

It is hard for me to provide any suggestions as I am not sure of what type of hair loss you are experiencing. For example if you are a male it could be hereditary androgenic hair loss, in that case the options are currently as to what you can do. Can you let me know your age spectrum and gender if you do not mind?
