When someones has oily hair we are talking about the scalp producing excessive amount of sebum (name of oil produced by the scalp) usually after the 2nd or 3rd day or even the same day if it's so excessive. You can also get oily hair from being heavy handed with products but that can be easily solved since it's not the nature of your hair/scalp that produced that oil, just you being too generous while applying them.Usually it starts occurring after adolescence.Naturally oily hair is genetically transmitted or formed from stress, medical conditions, poor hair care e.t.c...Oily hair might have the appearance of being thinner since the hair strands stick together (due to the excess oil).

The warnings !!!!

I've been monitoring people with oily hair and i often see some little mistakes most do that aggregates the problem.Below i list some of them:

1.TOP mistake!

Shampooing and conditioning: People with oily hair have to know this fact.Shampoo your scalp and hair as usual but when it's time for conditioning or using hair mask there is something you have to note.Don't apply it to the hair close to your scalp.Conditioners are full of emollients, silicone, oils e.t.c (except if oil free) and applying it close to your scalp adds an extra coating of such ingredients to it.Which we don't want.So you are to apply those moisturizing conditioners and mask about 2 inches or more away from your scalp.Specifically focus on the ends which are the most dry and fragile.

2.Products :

You have to carefully choose the products you are to use.Let's say you are about to flat iron and want to use a silicone based product once again don't apply it from root to tip, but do as i said when applying the conditioner.Mostly toward the ends and away from your scalp.Avoid combination product such as 2 in 1 shampoos just for the reason stated in mistake no.1.Make sure what you are using isn't designed for normal-dry hair.

3.Oil:

I've notice some people with oily hair sometimes want to do hot oil treatments  or apply oil on their hair  e.t.c If you want to use an oil  that you can leave on your hair, the best choice to go for is jojoba oil, it's similar to the sebum of our scalp. It actually regulates the production of sebum.
If you want to use any other oil, i suggest you apply it  before shampooing and then wash it out with a clarifying shampoo (which strips the hair from every form of oil). Some suggestions are Pantene Pro-V Clarifying Shampoo and  Neutrogena Shampoo Anti-Residue Formula Hair Shampoo.

*People with oily hair don't need oils and conditioners only those with an oily scalp but dry ends.*

4.Manipulation:

Too much scrubbing/massaging  while shampooing, combing, brushing (no way to the 100 strokes a day :) ) stimulate the scalp and make it produce more oils.Another thing to do is keep your hands out of your hair since our hands contain natural oils too and help spread the oil through your hair.Never shampoo more than once a day.

5.Look at the temperature:
Heat favours the production of oil.So too much hot water will promote oily hair, the same thing goes for a hot dryer e.t.c

6.Massaging- Massaging causes more oil producing. But when done twice a week before shampooing (not while shampooing) on dry hair can help remove some amount of oil  to the surface of scalp, which you will wash out with the shampoo.

Tips to regulate, manage and/or reduce the oil production of your scalp

a.Use shampoos that contain shampoos with zinc PCA that reduces oil production from the sebaceous glands.

b.Your shampoo should be mild; good for everyday use since you will be using it as much as needed and should have a ph from 4.5-6.Better plain than creamy (usually creamy ones have lots of oily compounds).

c.Try a dry shampoo if you want to extend your next shampoo or temporary cut down the greasiness. For example you can try Schwarzkopf Batiste Dry Shampoo (or any other dry shampoo), which does not require washing and allows you to wait longer before doing a traditional wash.Another cheaper thing you can do is apply talcum powder or baby powder which absorbs excess oil and brush it out.

d.Jojoba oil helps regulate the oil productions of the sebaceous glands; keep that in mind.

e.Watch your diets and or supplementation- When you intake foods rich in oils like a high dose of fish oil your scalp has the right to secrete more oils (thought some theories contradict to this while other don't but I've actually see this happen to people with oily hair).Try to eat more fruits and veggies instead.Loaded with vitamins,antioxidants... a hair treat.

d.If the cause of oiliness is stress (let me note than some females may have oilier hair on menstruation too), which stress causes more oil production.Try stress management and relax.Life has it's ups and down, but it all has a lesson to teach.

That's it!

Hope this post of mine was helpful to someone took me lots of time to come up with it. ^_^
