Pre-poo? What is prepooing and how to prepoo your hair.

Along the hair 'world' there are various of terms, shortcuts, abbreviations, techniques. At first when I had  the knowledge on level 0 you can tell how confusing it was but now it's not that scary at all and of course I'll break it down for you guys :) .

What's a pre-poo?

Prepoo as you see me break it down comes from the word pre which obviously means before and poo which is a shortcut used instead of saying shampoo. After putting it back together my simple definition for it is:

A process done before shampooing to prepare the hair for shampooing.

It's sort of a preparation that is especially beneficial for dry and/or damaged hair.I actually don't recommend it for oily hair.

What's the benefits of it and what does it do?

The goal of shampooing basically is to get rid of dirt, smells, excess oils, sweat, build up and basically a hygiene thing to keep your scalp from things like scalp fungi, clogged pores and prevent some scalp disorders that has to with the 'cleanness' of your scalp.

Dry hair has is due to many factors such as unhealthy practices, the environment, sometimes just genetics, the texture of your hair, the amount of sebum(natural oils produced by your scalp)  your scalp produces and so on.

By prepooing someone with dry hair  basically tries to counteract the stripping effects of a sulfate or non sulfate shampoos, (yeah I've seen lot's of sulfate shampoos that have no mercy to dry hair too). What you actually do is adding an extra coating of emollients, oily and/or moisturizing agents to your hair so that the shampoo won't actually remove all of the moisture and oils your hair has.Eventually ending up with less striped hair.

The question that comes into my mind and probably all you smart beauty bookworms :) is....

Isn't that counteracting the essence of shampooing, also leaving your hair less 'clean' and don't we waste more shampoo to get all the product out?

Wow that's a smart one and yeah very very tricky one too! When i shampoo my scalp, i'm using me as an example, i have various motives behind my mind.I sometimes shampoo  for a deep cleanse, other times to get rid sweat, smells e.t.c so it's not all time that shampooing is made to be stripping and different types of shampoos for different tasks (if used at all because some opt to use no shampoo  according to the regime they follow) .And that's so important for people with dry hair to know. Also take notice of the way i use the words scalp and hair which probably i need to explain on another post.
We don't waste shampoos because we shampoo as many times as we use to, and of course dry hair shouldn't use stripping shampoos anyway only in some specific instances.Applying a light coating helps reduce your need to increase the amount of shampoo more that your usual. Also the less 'clean', your hair gets easily cleaned by your shampoo, having a little bit more moisture isn't a harm since your scalp also produces oils and if those oils were bad for your hair they won't be produced naturally on any human scalp. But note that there is a difference between build up and lubricated hair.Build up is no good while lubricated hair is especially beneficial for dry hair.

How does someone prepoo?

I'll put it in steps

1.You can dampen your hair a bit if that helps make it more manageable also helps distribute the product easily and more economic in the sense that you use less product.(optional)
2.Apply an oil, a deep conditioner, a conditioner, a homemade hair mask...something that your hair likes but is also cheap since most of it will be washed off anyway.Using something light, maybe something that doesn't contain silicone will be good for fine dry hair.Apply it lightly on all your hair from tips to roots.
3.You can move ahead straight for shampooing especially if it's an instant lets say 3min conditioner or 1-2 min conditioner. If you want deeper penetration, you use deep conditioners or oils, leave it on for more minutes 15 min-1hr  with a shower cap if possible. Then go ahead and shampoo as you do.
4.Now as you rinse the shampoo you will feel an amount of moisture, not the build up bad kind of sticky moisture but kind of it being a little extra smooth than when you use shampoo alone. That's what we are looking for.Now go ahead and apply your next treatments as needed.

Tippy tip  from Glorious Angel ^_^

I actually like to apply the shampoo in this manner if prepooing...
- hair is coated with prepoo
-emulsify the shampoo on my palms then apply on my scalp.
-start massaging. You will feel the emulsion of the shampoo-conditioner or whatever you used going on, on your finger tips
-i then wet my hair with water proceed with  massaging the  shampoo on my scalp, work it on my hair a bit then rinse.

Voila!That's the way i like it...tee hee

NOTE:
This can be done on most shampoo days but when you see that you have build up opt to use a deep cleansing shampoo without prepooing before.

Give it a try and let me know what you think.Did it benefit your dry hair?
